HEAD OF SS-SONDERKOMMANDO LANGE THAT KILLED MENTALLY ILL IN THE T4 EUTHANASIA PROGRAM, MURDERED JEWS FROM GHETTO LITZMANNSTADT AND AIDED IN CATCHING THE CONSPIRATORS OF STAUFFENBERG’S 20 JULY PLOT AGAINST HITLER

SS-STURMBANNFÜHRER HERBERT LANGE

Offered for sale is this rare original 1935 document, signed by (at the time) SS-Rottenführer Herbert Lange. He was the commandant of Chełmno death camp until April 1942 and in the begin of 1940 he assumed command of the SS Special Detachment Lange (SS-Sonderkommando Lange), tasked with the murder of metally ill in the Wartheland region, as well as conducting the murder of Jews from the Ghetto Litzmannstadt. He was responsible for countless crimes against humanity including the murder of mental patients in Poland and in Germany during the Aktion T4 Euthanasia program. In 1944 Lange aided in catching the conspirators of the attempt on Hitler’s life (the 20 July Plot), leading to his promotion to SS-Sturmbannführer. Lange was killed in action at Bernau bei Berlin during the Battle of Berlin on 20 April 1945. He would have been sentenced to death for sure and executed, if he would have survived the war. The document that is offered for sale is in DIN A4 size (roughly 8-1/2 x 11 inch), written on both sides and signed by Herbert Lange. It is of interesting content, as it deals about his request for permission to get married (Heiratsgesuch), which had to be approved by the Rasse- und Siedlungshauptamt – SS in Berlin. Every SS marriage had to meet the SS standards as well as comply with the Nazi Nuremberg Racial Laws. His case must have required some special examination because not only committed his father suicide but his sister also experienced frequent cramp attacks. Before he was allowed to get married, Herbert Lange’s mental state had to be examined to ensure that he would not have the same symptoms as the people that he killed in the T4 Euthanasia Program. In the letter he writes that he is still waiting for reports of his sister’s doctor which he will then submit to the RSHA. He does not write anything saying that either his father’s suicide or his sister’s illness had any effects on him and his health condition. Obviously he must have passed the examination, because he was with the SS to almost the very end of the Third Reich.
