1940 award recommendation letter, signed by the commander of the SS-Totenkopf Division, Theodor Eicke as well as by (then) SS-Sturmbannführer Heinz Lammerding. Lammerding made a name for himself by ordering the massacres at Tulle and Oradour-sur-Glane and who was convicted of war crimes and served a prison sentence in West Germany while sentenced to death in absentia by the French. The West German government refused to extradite Lammerding to France and he died in 1971 before the French could pull off something similar as the Mossad did when they captured Eichmann. Lammerding recommends in this letter that a SS-Sturmman Jochen Merlinger from the SS-Totenkopf Division Ia (Pionier Battalion) shall be awarded the General Assault Badge (Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen) and Eicke approved that with his signature.
