Award documents for SS doctors are extremely rare, simply because they rarely were at the frontlines. In 1940 SS-Obersturmführer Dr. Fritz Fischer became the troop physician of the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler (SS-Sanitätsabteilung 1) and he was awarded the Kriegsverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse mit Schwertern (War Merit Cross 1st Class with Swords) and the LSSAH commander Sepp Dietrich signed the award document that is offered here. Next to the excellent ink signature is a nice LSSAH rubber stamp. Dr. Fritz Fischer was wounded and because of that he was assigned to the SS Sanatorium Hohenlychen where he worked already in 1939, and he then worked as a surgical assistant to Dr. Karl Gebhardt in the camp hospital of Ravensbrück concentration camp. There he participated in surgical experiments carried out on concentration camp inmates for which he was tried in the Doctor’s Trial in Nuremberg. He was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity and received a life sentence, which was reduced to 15 years and in 1954 he was released. He actually regained his license to practice medicine and worked for years for a chemical company in Ingelheim. He died in 2003.
