SS-OBERSTURMBANNFüHRER KURT WEISSE

EVEN HIS OWN SS COMRADES CALLED HIM A ‘DEVIL’

SS-Obersturmbannführer Kurt Weisse joined the NSDAP in 1931. He joined the SS as an unpaid volunteer a year later. When the Nazis came to power he became a paid SS-VT man.

He was commissioned as Untersturmführer in February 1935 and was sent to Oranienburg concentration camp, and in January 1936 he was promoted to Obersturmführer. In September that year he was again promoted to Hauptsturmführer and given command of a Company of SS-TV Standarte ‘Thüringen’. He was sent to Poland in September 1939 as commander of SS-TV ‘Ostmark’ and to Russia in July 1941 where in September he received shrapnel in one leg and was hospitalized back in Germany.

After release from hospital he was sent as an instructor to 3. SS TV in Sennelager.

In January 1943 he physically struck a soldier who was accused of stealing. For this he was Court Martialed and sent to an SS penal company with Oskar Dirlewangers Brigade in Russia, who in July 1943 assigned him as commander of 1 Company.

For good service in 1943 & 1944 fighting in Russia & Poland he was awarded a number of bravery badges and medals (including the German Cross in Gold in 1944), was promoted to Sturmbannführer in 1944 and became Dirlewanger’s Divisional Ops. Officer (1. Generalstabsoffizier) or adjutant, leading the Dirlewanger regiment when Dirlewanger was absent. He was feared and called a ‘devil’, even by his own SS comrades. He was promoted to Obersturmbannführer in January 1945. He was captured by British troops in May 1945, dressed as an army private. They held him in detention not knowing who he was. He escaped on 5th March 1946 while still under investigation.

The document, dated 24 July 1940 and sent to the SS and Police Court in Den Haag he notifies that his case was closed, and he was acquitted. Nice full signature in ink.
