Die Kunst im Deutschen Reich (The Art of the German Empire), before September 1939 titled Die Kunst im Dritten Reich (The Art of the Third Reich) was a state-published art magazine in Nazi Germany, and the country’s biggest art publication. It began publication in January 1937 and was published monthly until July 1944; occasionally in double issues. The magazine was very strict and selective in what it featured, and extremely few of its artists were women. Exhibits at the Grosse Deutsche Kunstaustellung (Great German Art Exhibition) amounted for approximately one third of the magazine’s illustrations. In 1939, its circulation was 50,000 copies. These monthly periodicals were published by Central Publishing House of the NSDAP to educate the German people about Third Reich art and architecture. Die Kunst im Dritten (Deutschen) Reich was published in two editions, Ausgabe A and Ausgabe B, which contained a longer chapter on architecture. Prof. Albert Speer and Dr. Ing Fritz Todt (until his death in 1942) were mainly responsible for the content of these excellent periodicals, also one of Hitler’s other favorite architects, Gerdy Troost. The size of these amazing periodicals on high quality paper (even during war times Speer did not go cheap) is 11 x 14 inches and each issue contains great photo material, a lot of it full page photos and some even in full color. Included is the sought-after issue last (double) issue June/July 1944. After that the publication was stopped because of the war. Also, interesting and worth mentioning is the fact that these late war (1944) issues no longer contained any advertisings in the back. Nobody was in the market to buy a porcelain eagle from Hutschenreuter or a bronze Hitler bust when German cities were bombed day and night and the enemy was advancing from all sides.
