Offered for sale is a two-page document, dated 10 October 1941 and issued by SS-Sturmbannführer Otto Winter who commanded the 11. SS-Standarte ‘Planetta’ (named after the Austrian Otto Planetta who fired the shots on chancellor Dollfuss for which he was hanged and who became a martyr under the Nazis). The document is also signed by no other than SS-Gruppenführer and Generalleutnant der Polizei Kaltenbrunner. He recommends Amon Göth’s promotion to SS-Untersturmführer and supports the promotion with his signature.
Göth was assigned to various tasks in the Generalgouvernement, including the liquidation of the Krakow ghetto, making him directly responsible for the murder and deportation of thousands of Jews. However, he really became infamous as the commandant of Plaszow concentration camp where he was nicknamed the “Schlächter von Plaszow” (Butcher of Plaszow). He personally tortured and murdered inmates nearly on a daily basis and became known worldwide as the villain in the movie ‘Schindler’s List’. He stole valuables from Jewish inmates and since the SS regarded confiscated Jewish belongings as property of the German State, he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944 and would have been sentenced to death by a SS court, if the nearing end of the war would have not saved him. Instead, he was extradited to Poland after the war and sentenced to death by a Krakow court and executed a few days later.
