SS Panzerdivision ‘Hitlerjugend’ informs the mother of a SS-Rottenführer that her son fell for Germany a day before. Here is the text followed by the translation of the entire letter which Witt then signed:

Today, I have the very painful duty of informing you that your son, SS-Rottenführer Siegfried Döll, fell in battle for Germany yesterday while carrying out a dispatch mission, true to his oath of allegiance. Due to a radio failure in his squad, your son was ordered to deliver a message to a nearby tank company. He succeeded in delivering the important message to the unit commander. On his way back to his squad, your son was struck in the thigh by a piece of shrapnel. Due to the intense enemy fire, his comrades were unable to retrieve him immediately. I offer you my deepest condolences, also on behalf of his comrades.

The Division Commander

Only six days after Witt signed the letter he was killed in action himself when a Royal Navy artillery barrage hit the divisional command post in Normandy, France!
