Benno Orendi (29 March 1918 in Sibiu †– 17 September 1948 in Hameln) was a Romanian physician and camp physician in the rank of SS-Untersturmführer in the women’s concentration camp Ravensbrück.
On June 25, 1940, as a medical student, he was called to the “Waffendienst für Deutschland” and volunteered for the Waffen-SS (No. 379.245). He was assigned to the 4th Panzer Destroyer Division and took part in the Russian campaign. In the autumn of 1942, he was sent to Berlin to finish his studies. On April 20, 1944, he received his doctorate as Dr. med.
From 26 April to 21 December 1944, Orendi was seconded to the Ravensbrück women’s concentration camp, where he was to spend the first part of his assistant years as a camp doctor under the direction of Percival Treite. He is said to have carried out experiments on humans to regenerate bones, muscles and nerves, and experiments were also carried out on camp inmates in which the victims were infected with bacteria and then treated with antibiotics.
In court, Orendi invoked his oath of loyalty to Adolf Hitler and the associated “command emergency” in the fourth of the seven Hamburg Ravensbrück trials, saying that he had always acted only on the orders of others and was therefore not responsible for his actions. His claim that he was concerned about the well-being of the prisoners was refuted by numerous witness statements.
Orendi was found guilty and sentenced to death on 4 June 1948. On the same day, he was transferred from the Altona court prison to the Fuhlsbüttel penitentiary. From there he was transferred to Hameln prison on 15 September 1948, where he was executed by hanging on 17 September 1948. [source: Wikipedia]
The document, dated 5 September 1943 and signed in ink by Orendi, is a financial statement in which he confirms that he has no debt and RM 1,000 in cash. This document then became part of his SS personnel file. At the time he had the rank of SS-Oberscharführer.
