ONE OF THE RAREST ANTI-JEWISH NAZI BOOKS FOR CHILDREN PUBLISHED IN NAZI GERMANY

‘DER GIFTPILZ’ (THE POISONOUS MUSHROOM OR THE TOADSTOOL)

PUBLISHED IN 1938 BY JULIUS STREICHER’S STÜRMERVERLAG IN NÜRNBERG

AN EXTREMELY RARE ITEM OF HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE

This book is one of three books for kids that were published by Julius Streicher’s Stürmerverlag in Nürnberg. The extremely anti-Semitic tales are written by Ernst Hiemer and the illustrations are by Philip Rupprecht, better known as the Stürmer cartoonist FIPS.

The titles of the other two Stürmer kids’ books were “Trau keinem Fuchs” (Trust No Fox) and “Der Pudelmopsdackelpinscher” (an arrangement of dog names). Each of the three books was aimed especially at children of a certain age group and each of the books contains short stories for children together with an anti-Jewish illustration telling them how to recognize a Jew, his criminal and mean nature and so on. The title itself is self-explanatory and in the story in the book it talks about a poisonous mushroom: ” Just as it is often hard to tell a toadstool from an edible mushroom, it is often very difficult to recognize the Jew as a swindler and criminal, too…” Other illustrated stories in this book show the kids how to tell a Jew: “the Jewish nose is bent, it looks like the number six…” or how an ugly Jew tries to make two Aryan kids follow him home, alluring them with candy; another one is about how Jews torment animals, how it slowly dies, and the Jews stand around it and laugh and so on!

The book is complete, and the condition is very nice. The binding as a whole is firm and tight. The colors of the illustrations are as bright as if the book was printed yesterday and not 80+ years ago.

This book ships from one of our affiliates in Germany, worldwide DHL shipping is included.
