Original photograph of SS-Hauptsturmführer Fritz Klingenberg with a fellow SS comrade, taken in front of a SS Lazarett (Field Hospital). Klingenberg addresses the SS comrade who stands next to him on the photograph, but we were unable to decipher what he wrote (Sütterlin, the old-style German script is often tough to decipher). We are only sure that it says ‘Im Osten 6.4.43’, meaning that the picture was taken on 6 April 1943 at the eastern front. If a photograph surfaces that depicts Klingenberg, in most cases it is the official Associated Press photo, taken by a Bildberichter (Photo Correspondent), making this private photograph an even greater rarity. Very nice original condition and nice original ink dedication and signature. Klingenberg made it to the rank on SS-Standartenführer. He was KIA in March of 1945 in France.
Fritz Klingenberg managed with only a handful of his Waffen-SS men that the capital of Yugoslavia, Belgrade surrendered to him. For this he was awarded the Knight’s Cross. Today Belgrade is the capital of Serbia.
