HE PERFORMED GRUESOME MEDICAL EXPERIMENTS ON MANY INMATES
SS-Hauptsturmführer Rudolf Adalbert Brachtel received his doctorate in medicine and worked as an internist from 1938. He then learned the examination method of liver puncture from Wilhelm Nonnenbruch in Frankfurt am Main. Brachtel (SS No. 327,556) was drafted into the Waffen-SS in November 1939 and worked as a doctor in the Dachau concentration camp from April 1941 to February 1943. In Dachau he headed the X-ray department, was an assistant to Claus Schilling in the malaria experimental station for a year and headed a tuberculosis ward. His experiments on concentration camp prisoners included infection with malaria, performing liver punctures for experimental purposes, and participating in hypothermia experiments. In addition, according to former concentration camp prisoner Walter Neff, Brachtel ordered the selection of sick concentration camp prisoners for the gassing facilities.
After the end of the Second World War, he was indicted on 24 November 1947 in a side trial of the Dachau main trial as part of the Dachau trials together with the chief capo of the infirmary Karl Zimmermann. In 1942, infectious jaundice was rampant in the Dachau camp. According to witnesses, he made punctures on about 180 prisoners. According to his own statement, he had made about 80 punctures, which would have had only diagnostic character. Like Zimmermann, Brachtel was acquitted on 11 December 1947 for lack of evidence. Dr. med. Rudolf Brachtel sent this letter to the Besoldungsstelle der Waffen-SS, requesting a ‘Notstandsbeihilfe’ (financial aid) after the birth of his third child. Interesting that he signed it as a medical doctor and not with his rank of SS-Hauptsturmführer.
