Offered for sale is this rare original document, signed by SS-Brigadeführer Odilo Globocnik in 1938 when he held the position of Gauleiter of Vienna, capital of just annexed Austria. He later became the feared SS and Police leader of the district Lublin in the Generalgouvernement, the German occupied part of Poland. He was a key figure of the Holocaust and responsible for the murder of one million Jews.
The letter he wrote to Gauleiter Josef Bürckel on his official letterhead, asking him to keep the trade school in Vienna open. Bürckel confirms the receipt by initialing underneath the stamp with date that confirms the arrival of the document in Bürckel’s office. Strong ink signature of Odilo Globocnik.
Odilo Globočnik (21 April 1904 – 31 May 1945) was an Austrian war criminal. He was a member of the National Socialist German Worker’s Party and later a high-ranking leader of the Schutzstaffel. As an associate of Adolf Eichmann, he had a leading role in Operation Reinhard, which saw the murder of over one million mostly Polish Jews during the Holocaust in Nazi extermination camps Majdanek, Treblinka, Sobibór and Bełżec. Historian Michael Allen described him as “the vilest individual in the vilest organization ever known”. Globocnik was tracked down and captured by a British armored cavalry unit on 31 May 1945 in Austria. Before he could get interrogated, he committed suicide by biting on a cyanide capsule.
Anything from or about him is extremely rare and this is only the second signature of him that we offer in all the years.
