SS-Gruppenführer Arthur Nebe held key positions in the security and police apparatus of Nazi Germany and was, from 1941 on, a major perpetrator of the Holocaust. Nebe rose through the ranks of the Prussian police force to become head of Nazi Germany’s Criminal Police (Kriminalpolizei; Kripo) in 1936, which was amalgamated into the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA) in 1939. Before the 1941 German invasion of the Soviet Union, Nebe volunteered to serve as the commanding officer of Einsatzgruppe B, one of the four mobile death squads of the SS. The unit was deployed in the Army Group Centre Rear Area, in modern-day Belarus; it reported over 45,000 victims by November 1941. Nebe experimented with explosives and carbon monoxide gas, trying to find more effective ways to kill Jews. In late 1941, Nebe was posted back to Berlin and resumed his career with the RSHA. Nebe commanded the Kripo until he was denounced and executed following the unsuccessful attempt to kill Adolf Hitler in July 1944. In ‘Operation Valkyrie’, led by Graf von Stauffenberg who planted the bomb in Hitler’s Wolfs Lair on 20 July 1944, Nebe’s job was to kill Himmler, but it never came to that. [source: Wikipedia]
SS-Gruppenführer Arthur Nebe’s Wikipedia page: Arthur Nebe – Wikipedia
The document, dated 29 March 1940 and typed on the official Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RSHA) in Berlin, Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse 8 stationary was written and signed by SS-Gruppenführer Arthur Nebe, head of the Criminal Police. It is addressed to (then) SS-Gruppenführer und head of the SiPo and SD Reinhard Heydrich! Heydrich confirms the receipt of the letter with his signature. The document is also stamped ‘Geheim!’ (Secret!) and bears a stamp from the SD-Hauptamt (main office) in which is documented when it was received and by whom. The content is of extremely historical significance because it deals about the registration of Gypsies (‘Zigeunererfassung’)! Nebe justifies that the process is going slower than anticipated with the ‘fact’ that his men are basically dealing with criminal elements who are unwilling to follow any kind of rules who are opposing the German Police wherever and whenever they can and who are a burden for society. Nebe states that only a strict implementation of the order will ensure a successful battle against the Gypsies (‘Zigeunerfrage’) within the entire Reich and German controlled territories.
SS-Obergruppenführer und General der Polizei Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich was a principal architect of the Holocaust. He was chief of the Reich Security Main Office (including the Gestapo, Kripo, and SD). He was also Stellvertretender Reichsprotektor (Deputy/Acting Reich-Protector) of Bohemia and Moravia. He served as president of the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC, later known as Interpol) and chaired the January 1942 Wannsee Conference which formalized plans for the “Final Solution to the Jewish Question”—the deportation and genocide of all Jews in German-occupied Europe.
Many historians regard Heydrich as the darkest figure within the Nazi regime; Adolf Hitler described him as “the man with the iron heart”. He was the founding head of the Sicherheitsdienst (Security Service, SD), an intelligence organization charged with seeking out and neutralizing resistance to the Nazi Party via arrests, deportations, and murders. He helped organize Kristallnacht, a series of coordinated attacks against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on 9–10 November 1938. The attacks were carried out by SA Stormtroopers and civilians and presaged the Holocaust. Upon his arrival in Prague, Heydrich sought to eliminate opposition to the Nazi occupation by suppressing Czech culture and deporting and executing members of the Czech resistance. He was directly responsible for the Einsatzgruppen, the special task forces that travelled in the wake of the German armies and murdered more than two million people by mass shooting and gassing, including 1.3 million Jews.
Heydrich was mortally wounded in Prague on 4 June 1942 as a result of Operation Anthropoid. He was ambushed by a team of Czech and Slovak soldiers who had been sent by the Czech government-in-exile to kill the Reich-Protector; the team was trained by the British Special Operations Executive. Heydrich died from his injuries a week later. Nazi intelligence falsely linked the Czech and Slovak soldiers and resistance partisans to the villages of Lidice and Ležáky. Both villages were razed; the men and boys age 14 and above were shot, and all but a handful of the women and children were deported and killed in Nazi concentration camps. [source: Wikipedia]
