SS-Obergruppenführer and General of the Waffen-SS Karl Friedrich Wolff served as Chief of Personal Staff Reichsführer-SS (Heinrich Himmler) and an SS liaison to Adolf Hitler during World War II. He ended the war as the Supreme SS and Police Leader in occupied Italy and helped arrange for the early surrender of Axis forces in that theatre, effectively ending the war there several days sooner than in the rest of Europe. He escaped prosecution at the Nuremberg Trials as a result of his participation in Operation Sunrise. In 1962, Wolff was arrested in West Germany and prosecuted for the deportation of Polish Jews. In 1964, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for being an accessory to murder. He was released in 1971 and died 13 years later.
The DIN A5 size letter (about 8-1/2 x 11 inch) is typed on his official stationery as the Chef des Persönlichen Stabes des Reichsführer-SS, meaning Heinrich Himmler’s adjutant in the Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse 8 in Berlin. It is dated 28 August 1939, only days before the outbreak of the Poland campaign which ignited World War Two. The letter is addressed to SS-Obergruppenführer Hildebrandt with whom Wolff must have been friends. During the war, Hildebrandt served as a Higher SS and Police Leader (HSSPF) in Nazi-occupied Poland, the Soviet Union and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. He was the last head of the RSHA (SS Race and Settlement Main Office in SS headquarters), charged with enforcing Germanization policies. After the war, Hildebrandt was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity by an American military court and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was subsequently extradited to Poland to stand trial for separate charges, sentenced to death, and executed. Wolff begins the letter with some personal pleasantries and then thanks Hildebrandt for his recommendation of adding a Dr. Fahrenkamp to Himmler’s personal staff. The letter ends with ‘Heil Hitler!’ and is signed Ihr getreuer Wolff (Your loyal Wolff)
