Offered here is a true rarity: a very nice copy of the legendary 1935 photo book by Leni Riefenstahl about the making of the Nazi propaganda movie documenting the 1934 Reich Party Days, entitled ‘Triumph des Willens’. Hitler asked Riefenstahl to make the movie, and the finished movie is regarded as one of the greatest propaganda films in history. Original copies of this book rarely surface (the dust jacket of this book is a copy) but what makes this one one-of-a-kind is the long 1935 dedication with political content to a Hans Pagels, who was involved in the making of the movie! After the war Riefenstahl claimed that she had no affiliation with the Nazis and portrayed herself as only a follower who did not know about any atrocities but the dedication in this book, the only pre-1945 political statement of Riefenstahl we have ever seen shows something different. Her dedication reads: “Hans Pagels zur Erinnerung an Ihre Mitarbeit am Triumph des Willens. In besonderer Anerkennung Ihrer wunderbaren Ausdruckskraft als Sprecher im Chor vom Arbeitsdienst, April 1935, Heil Hitler, Leni Riefenstahl” Translation: ‘To Hans Pagels to commemorate your involvement in the making of Triumph of the Will. In Special recognition of your wonderful expression as speaker in the chorus of the Labor Service, April 1935, Heil Hitler, Leni Riefenstahl”! Anything pre-1945 signed by Riefenstahl is rare but a dedication with political content is pretty much unheard of.
