Heinrich Schendel was a German SS-Scharführer of the Waffen-SS who fought with the 6th Company of the II Battalion/Panzergrenadier Regiment 35 of the 16th SS Panzergrenadier Division “Reichsführer SS” as well as with the II./SS-Panzer Regiment “Das Reich”. He was involved with the massacre of Sant’ Anna di Stazzema in Italy in 1944. A total of about 560 civilians fell victim to this massacre, mainly women, children and the elderly. For this, Schendel was sentenced to life imprisonment by an Italian military court in La Spezia. Despite being convicted in Italy, Schendel was neither tried nor extradited to Italy in Germany after the Stuttgart public prosecutor’s office defeated the case. He died a free man in 2012.
