Offered for sale is this rare original 1943 document, written, signed and sent to SS-Obergruppenführer Berger (Head of the SS-Hauptamt) by the father of the V2 rocket, the first artificial object to travel into space on 20 June 1944, signed by SS-Sturmbannführer Wernher von Braun. Berger confirmed the receipt of the letter with his full signature. Anything signed by Wernher von Braun in the war years is exceedingly rare and desirable, but what makes this letter unique is the content! Wernher von Braun thanks Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler and SS-Obergruppenführer Berger for their personal efforts to get him an audience with Hitler. Von Braun tells Berger that he had received a personal invitation to meet the Führer and that Hitler was that much impressed that the German rocket program will now finally receive the necessary attention and funding. Especially the last sentence deserves special attention: ‘Der totale Einsatz der Kriegswirtschaft in Sachen Raketenprogramm wird kriegsentscheidend sein!’ (The total mobilization of the war economy for the missile program will be decisive for the outcome of the war!).
Wernher von Braun escaped justice for his Nazi war crimes because with him the United States won the space race against the Soviets when the Saturn V rocket that he designed put the first humans on the moon in 1969.
