HE SEARCHED FOR THE HOLY GRAIL ON HEINRICH HIMMLER’S ORDERS

Otto Wilhelm Rahn (18 February 1904 – 13 March 1939) was a German medievalist, Ariosophist, and SS officer who researched Holy Grail myths. Otto Rahn is considered one of the most enigmatic figures of the Third Reich and was the inspiration for the Indiana Jones movie character. From an early age, Otto Rahn dedicated himself to Grail research. In the process, he caught the attention of Heinrich Himmler, who personally inducted him into the SS and appointed him SS-Obersturmführer.

Subsequently, Himmler actively supported Rahn’s research. Rahn published two books regarding his quest for the Grail: *Kreuzzug gegen den Gral* (Crusade Against the Grail) and *Luzifers Hofgesind* (Lucifer’s Court). Original copies of these books are virtually impossible to find today. In 1938, as a result of a plot orchestrated by Rahn’s critics, his homosexuality was exposed to the Reichsführer-SS.

Faced with the choice of either being expelled from the SS and sent to a concentration camp or committing suicide, Rahn traveled to the Bavarian mountains; during a snowstorm, he sat down against a tree with two bottles of cognac and allowed himself to be buried by the snow. His body was not discovered until months later.

To date, no handwritten documents by Rahn have surfaced. Consequently, the present volume—bearing a personal inscription to the prominent esoteric anti-Semite Johannes Müller of Elmau is to be regarded as an object of exceptional significance. Rahn writes: “To Johannes Müller, the Sage of Elmau — Otto Rahn, Freiburg, June 17, 1933.”
