THE RAREST ANTI-JEWISH NAZI BOOKS FOR CHILDREN PUBLISHED IN NAZI GERMANY
‘DER PUDELMOPSDACKELPINSCHER’
PUBLISHED IN 1940 BY JULIUS STREICHER’S STÜRMERVERLAG IN NÜRNBERG
AN EXTREMELY RARE ITEM OF HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE
The book is in very good condition, no damage to any of the pages, only minor and normal signs of wear and yellowing of the pages, the flaps of the original dust jacket have separated but are enclosed. This book and the two other books that were published before by Julius Streicher’s Stürmer Verlag in Nürnberg were regarded as such dangerous material that the Allies destroyed every copy they could find. This book was regarded too crude even among many Nazi officials.
Offered for sale is a copy of the soft cover edition, published in 1940. The extremely anti-Semitic text is written by Ernst Hiemer who was Streicher’s right hand. The illustrations are drawn by Willi Hofmann. Like the two other books it contains short stories. Each story compares the Jews to unpleasant forms of animals like drones, poisonous snakes, tapeworms, bedbugs, locusts, hyenas, mongrel dogs, even bacteria! Some experts today consider this book even more dangerous than the other two anti-Semitic children’s books, ‘Der Giftpilz’ and ‘Trau Keinem Fuchs‘. The reason for that is that children normally have a great interest in nature and animals and Hiemer constructed short stories of animals with unpleasant or dangerous characteristics and transfered them over to the Jews to demonstrate how undesirable the Jews are for the human world. Unlike in the other two books that were intended for younger children, this book gives a clear call to take action and to participate actively in the war against the Jews. The author leaves no doubt that the unpleasant forms of life in the animal kingdom must be exterminated, that it is a natural and expected occurrence. It must have been also only natural for the young reader that therefore the Jews had to be exterminated, too! Each of the three children’s books aimed at a different age group. “Der Giftpilz” (The Poisonous Mushroom) and “Trau keinem Fuchs…” (Trust No Fox…) have colorful illustrations by Fips and the text was read to the child by the mother. The third and last book “Der Pudelmopsdackelpinscher” was intended to be read by older children and it is the extremely anti-Semitic text that makes this book so dangerous.
The Foreword translates as follows: “Dear Reader! The book which you have just opened gives you colorful tales from the mysterious animal kingdom. You should not only watch animals but also certain – – humans. It is intended that you have fun with this book but also that you will learn from it. So, who are these animals and humans now will be your question. Just be patient! This book will answer your question.”
Here are some examples of how unpleasant life forms in the animal kingdom are compared to the behavior of Jews in this book:
Die Hyänen / Bluthunde (The hyenas / bloodhounds): this story compares the Jews with bloodhounds or hyenas who are not brave and only attack those who are already severely injured or weak. ‘You don’t find bloodhounds only among the animals, they are also among us humans – they are the Jews! You can recognize them on their nose, the way they walk, the shape of their ears, their devils’ eyes and from the horrible smell of their bodies. Without any merci they attack farmers who are in debt and take over their land and homes or drive honest salesmen into bankruptcy…’
Die Geissel Gottes (The Scourge of God): in this story the Jews are named as the evil which is described in the bible and the animal with whom the Jews are compared this time is the grasshopper. ‘As long as there are only a few of them they are not very dangerous but if they come en masse into the country, they become a gruesome scourge! But a scourge of Jews will be even more horrific than one of the grasshoppers…’
Die Faulenzer (The Slackers): in this story the Jews are compared with the drones. ‘In every nation there are millions of hard working, honest laborers, farmers, etc. who are like the bees. But like among the bees there are also drones among the humans – the Jews! They don’t work and live on the backs of the hard-working humans…’
Die Blutsauger (The Bloodsuckers): in this story the Jews are compared with bloodsucking bedbugs! Like those creatures secretly infiltrate into people’s homes the Jews infiltrate into various countries. Like the bedbugs who like to hide in the dirt the Jews like to live in the dirt. They live in neglected houses and hide in the dirt…
The last story deals about diphtheria and again, the comparison is made to the Jews: ‘as long as there are diphtheria bacteria there will be diphtheria and as long as there are Jews living on this planet there will be a Jewish danger!’ This basically was a clear call to exterminate the Jews. Remember, this book was intended for children!
In the introduction of another very rare Julius Streicher publication, “Die Judenfrage im Unterricht“, published in 1937 by Stürmerverlag, Streicher states in the foreword: “The National Socialist State requires that the teachers lecture about the racial theory in German classroom and for the German people the racial theory means the Jewish Problem”!
The title, an arrangement of several dog names, comes from one of the stories which focuses on a mongrel dog.
Considering that it was a book for kids that was published 80+ years ago it is in very good condition. The binding is tight, none of the pages has been separated or are otherwise damaged.
