Offered for sale is this rare original 1943 document, sent from Peenemünde, the birthplace of the V2 rocket, the first artificial object to travel into space on 20 June 1944, signed by SS-Sturmbannführer Wernher von Braun. What makes this document exceedingly rare and desirable is that the document bears von Braun’s SS rank and his SS number (185.068) and of course who signed it and where it was sent from. Wernher von Braun sent this message to the SS-Personalhauptamt to document in his SS file that the Führer himself bestowed him with the title ‘Professor’ on 8 July 1943 in the Führerhauptquartier. The message was sent on 12 August 1943 from Peenemünde and arrived in the SS-Personalhauptamt in Berlin 2 days later.
To the best of our knowledge, this currently is the only pre-1945 Wernher von Braun signed document sent from the birthplace of the V2 rocket with von Braun’s SS rank and SS number. Wernher von Braun escaped justice for his Nazi war crimes because with him the United States won the space race against the Soviets when the Saturn V rocket that he designed put the first humans on the moon in 1969.
