On June 27, 1933 the law "Gesetz über die Errichtung eines Unternehmens Reichsautobahnen" was passed. This law regulated the establishment of a new company "Reichsautobahn" as a branch of the Reichsbahn, the German railway company. It was a smart move to integrate the Reichsbahn in this project because the Reichsbahn officials saw the Autobahn as a competition but when Hitler made the director of the Reichsbahn the new chairman of the Reichsautobahn company he forced him to give everything to fulfill Hitlers Autobahn plans on time! Dr. Ing. Fritz Todt had been assigned "Generalinspektor für das deutsche Straßenwesen" in early 1933. In November 1933 his position became almost the status of a ministry. 1,000 kilometers of Reichsautobahn were finished each year in the years 1936 to 1938. From 1939 on the project slowed more and more down and came to an end (with a few small exceptions) by the end of 1941. By then the Reichs-autobahn had a total lenght of 3,827 kilometers.

This unique 8-1/2 x 11-1/2 inches book with 2,076 (!!) heavily illustrated pages is a one-of-a-kind reference for anyone interested in Reichsautobahn and Reichsbahn history! It is the official annual report for the year 1938 with so much information in there that we had a hard time to decide which pages to present in this description! There are hundreds of photos, illustrations, construction drawings, statistics, new laws and regulations and much more that it will probably take a year to read through all of it!

The yearbook was printed by order of the Reichsverkehrsministerium and printed by the Otto Elsner Verlagsgesellschaft in Berlin. These eight pounds (!) of pure Third Reich, Reichsautobahn and Reichsbahn history are in very good condition, not a single one of the 2000+ pages is missing or damaged!

The official Nazi State symbol with the letter D R which was mounted on the railway cars (and in many cases on Autobahn bridges). DR originally stood for Deutsches Reich but also for Deutsche Reichsbahn. One chapter in this book explains how the Nazi officials solved this problem!

Detailed report on the status of the Reichsautobahn in March 1938. German bureaucrats are always extra detail oriented and so you will not only learn how many kilometers of Autobahn were built in which part of the Reich but also how many trees had to be cut down, how many cubic meters of concrete were used, how many laborers were employed (they worked 2.2 million hours in 1938 on the RAB!), how much soil had to be moved, how many holes had to be drilled for blasting rocks, etc.! There is no way to find a more comprehensive source on the construction of the Reichsautobahn (and the Reichsbahn) for the year 1938 anywhere else!

On page 517 starts the official 1937 financial report on the Reichsautobahn

lots of Reichsautobahn photos...

... and RAB gas stations...

... and Autobahn bridges!

This chapter lists how many kilometers of which Autobahn were finished on which day in 1938! Here is one example: "3 September 1938 die Teilstrecke Nürnberg - Reichsparteitaggelände der Reichsautobahn Nürnberg-Stuttgart 5 kilometer"

At the end of this chapter it comes to a total of 1,048 kilometer of Autobahn finished in 1938 and a grand total of 3,062 kilometer Autobahn end of 1938.
