The father of our consignor purchased this grouping while in Germany in the mid 1970's from the estate of Dr. Johann von Leers.  It is well known that von Leers was good friends with Hermann Wirth (first president and one of the founders (along w/ Himmler, Darre) of the Ahnenerbe. Herman Wirth was the archeologist that found the "ancient" Julleuchter that Himmler and Allach based the SS Julleuchter on. The grouping consisted of several books from Herman Wirth to von Leers. One is signed/inscribed by Wirth to Leers and all have von Leers library bookplates. NOTE:  we are including the books in the photographs to show provenance but the books are NOT for sale (at least for the foreseeable future).  Along with the book grouping came this incredible one of a kind Julleuchter.
The Julleuchter is made of heavy ironstone ceramic with a beautiful oxidized glazing. It measures 10 inches in height and 5 inches in width at the base. It has the "heart" symbol for Earth/Hearth/Family and in place of the "Hagal" rune it has a stylized runic "N". This most likely stand for "Nordische" perhaps standing for the Nordischer Kreis (Nordic Circle) groups that both Johann von Leers and Herman Wirth had around them during the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s.

Offered here is a fine example of the well known SS Julleuchter, made in similar design like the ones made by Allach, the SS owned porcellain manufactury. The SS Leadership saw the SS Julleuchter as a replacement article for Christian occasions and to celebrate holidays and days that were of importance in the SS belief as well as important dates in NSDAP history such as Hitler's birthday. The Julleuchter was, for example, to be lit on the Mid-Summer Solstice, Mid-Winter Solstice and "Yol", the pagan Yuletide intended to replace Christmas. In the beginning Allach was the only maker of the Julleuchter but as the war progressed Allach was unable to meet the demand and this piece was coproduced by other manufacturers.
