ORIGINAL ADOLF HITLER PENCIL DRAWING

Ardoye in Flandern, 1914

Adolf Hitler. “Ardoye in Flandern”. A beautiful and sensitive rendition of another scene in the West Belgian province where Hitler found himself in the Great War. (One of the Hoffmann portfolio prints depicts a scene from the same area.) All of Hitler’s artistic strengths and weaknesses are revealed in this charming study of an outlying building—a wealthy farmer’ abode, perhaps, or a manor house too long in Flanders’ fields and showing signs of age. Note the lack of a sky other than the creamy paper it is drawn on. Note also that no figures are present which might have led us to some conclusion as to who occupies this storybook Flemish house. While Hitler’s sense of perspective is off—as in all his paintings—his sense of place is spot on. The foreground is loose and easy but we have little doubt that this house belongs on this land and has been here for decades and centuries. The architectural features of it stand out as much as if it were a portrait of a fascinating sitter that the artist might have met on his travels. Perhaps the secret to understanding Hitler’s artworks is the fact that he sees within the structures he depicts so well, something of the inhabitants. A portrait of a house by a great artist, it could be said, becomes the portrait of its owner. This house certainly has stories to tell and, if a work of art is to be successful, shouldn’t that be one of the reasons we might call a painting great? 8.6” x 9.5” Labeled upper left; signed lower right in pencil, dated 1914.
