REINHARD HEYDRICH, ADOLF HITLER'S PERSONAL REPRESANTATIVE AND ACTING REICHSPROTEKTOR OF BOHEMIA AND MORAVIA WAS MORTALLY WOUNDED WHEN MEMBERS OF THE CZECH RESISTANCE THREW A GRENADE INTO HIS OPEN MERCEDES

The Nazi world was in shock when a grenade, thrown into his Mercedes in May of 1942, mortally wounded one of the most important and influential members of the SS:SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, acting Reichsprotektor of Böhmen und Mähren (Bohemia and Moravia). He was killed by four members of the Czech resistance who were trained for their mission in Britain and parachuted into Prague. Shortly after the assassination thousands of SS and German Police searched for the assassins and none of them survived. Heydrich died in the hospital (from blood poisoning) and his coffin was transported to Berlin where one of the greatest funerals of the Nazi era took place. After Heydrich was buried the people who killed him were still in hiding and the Gestapo made only little progress finding them, no matter whom they tortured and/or executed. Hitler was no longer patient and ordered the complete destruction of the Bohemian village Lidice as a partial vergeance. Observed by SS-Obergruppenführer Karl Frank all men over 16 years of age were rounded up and executed, women were placed in Ravenbrück concentration camp and the children were deported to Germany for adoption or forced labor. The village then was completely blown up by units of the Reichsarbeitsdienst, roads were diverted and even a creek, with the goal that nothing should indicate anymore that there ever has been a village of the name Lidice.

The 7-1/2 x 9-1/4 inch, 100 page hardcover book (plus a four page supplement) was published shortly after Heydrich's death in his honor by Volk und Reich Verlag in Prague. This seldom seen publication is one of only a handful books that were published in honor of Reinhard Heydrich after his death and should not miss in any collection of historical SS material.
