Wittmann’s most famous achievement happened in 1944 in the French village Villers-Bocage where Wittmann’s Tiger I tank destroyed 13 or 14 enemy tanks, two anti-tank guns and a number of enemy transport vehicles within 15 minutes. He was awarded the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves and swords for his actions in this battle. Wittman was KIA in France on 8 August 1944.
