SS-STANDARTENFüHRER DR. ERWIN WEINMANN
Offered for sale is this 1942 dated DIN A4 letter, signed by the The commander of Sicherheitspolizei and SD, SS-Standartenführer Dr. Erwin Weinmann. The letter is a recommendation for a promotion of SS-Obersturmführer Dr. Seidl. Seidl was commandant of ghetto Theresienstadt. After that he became commandant of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and in 1944 he was part of the Sondereinsatzkommando Eichmann that was in charge of rounding up the Hungarian Jews and sending most of them to Auschwitz, nearly half a million within less than two months. We have a document signed by Seidl listed, too – please look for SKU (item) # C-715.
SS-Standartenführer Dr. Erwin Weinmann was a German physician, SS leader, head of RSHA Gruppe IV D (occupied territories), then commanded Sonderkommando 4a which was responsible for mass murder in the Ukraine and from summer of 1942 on he was Chief of the Sicherheitspolizei (SiPo) and SD in Prague. He was never captured and probably escaped to the Middle East.

This document is especially interesting and of great historic value because it is not only signed by one of the top officials of the SiPo and SD, the text also names ghetto commandant Seidl, Seidl’s promoter Adolf Eichmann but also Reinhard Heydrich. Here is the full translation of the document:
‘On 1 January 1940 SS-Obersturmführer Dr. Seidl was employed with the Central Agency for Jewish Emigration in Vienna and shortly after transferred to the Central Emigration in Poland. His duties were the resettlement of Jews and Polish civilians.
After that Seidl was appointed commandant of the ghetto Theresienstadt, established by order of SS-Obergruppenführer Heydrich in Bohemia and Moravia, until a complete ‘cleaning’ of the Jewish Question in the Protectorate Bohemia & Moravia. He is now responsible for the ghetto which already houses 50,000 Jews.
Seidl performed every task correctly and faithfully. He shows responsibility and the necessary strength.
He understands new orders quickly and implements them promptly. His behavior towards his superiors is always excellent, and towards his comrades friendly. Seidl’s character is open and honest and his belief of the world view is firm.
The department head of RSHA – IV B4 – (Judenreferat), SS-Obersturmbannführer Eichmann is in favor of a promotion of SS-Obersturmführer Dr. Seidl, especially because of his duties as ghetto commandant where he often has to attend meetings with high ranking officials.
Since the members of the RSHA office superior to Seidl have similar or even higher ranks, I am in favor of the promotion.
