SS KAMERADSCHAFTS SIEDLUNG

(SS COMRADESHIP SETTLEMENT)

THE REICHSFÜHRER-SS HAD THIS PURE ARYAN HOUSING PROJECT BUILT IN BERLIN-ZEHLENDORF

IN ONE OF THE NICEST DISTRICTS OF BERLIN

Unfortunately a mouse was faster and found this item as interesting as we did and took some bites from the back side of this extremely rare and out-standing piece of SS history! The good part: no text or any of the pictures are effected. We have NEVER seen this item before and it is very doubtful that we will find another one in the next years!

The Siedlung (German for housing project or settlement) offered a variety of different size apartments and houses - from a 3-room apartment for the newly wed SS couple to a 6-room house with full basement for the SS family with a lot of children.

The SS settlement was built in Berlin's most beautiful area which is among the most expensive districts of Berlin today: Zehlendorf. The SS-Siedlung is bordering Berlin's state forest, the Grunewald. The Berlin Brigade of the US Army had their headquarters and three of their four barracks in Zehlendorf (the other one, Andrews Barracks, was located in the Fincken-steinallee in Berlin-Dahlem in the former barracks of Adolf Hitlers Leib-standarte LSSAH).

(SS COMRADESHIP SETTLEMENT)

THE REICHSFÜHRER-SS HAD THIS PURE ARYAN HOUSING PROJECT BUILT IN BERLIN-ZEHLENDORF IN ONE OF THE NICEST DISTRICTS OF BERLIN

This super rare brochure was published by the SS Reich Leadership in conjunction with the GagfaH, a construction and apartment rental company which worked together with the SS as the general contractor of this housing project. The SS leadership was looking for an appropriate way and location where the members of the three Berlin SS Hauptämter (main offices) and their families could live together in an Aryan community. In 1937 Heinrich Himmler found the right location in Zehlendorf, a district in the south-west of the Reichshauptstadt Berlin, nearby the lake Schlachtensee and in a green environment bordering to the Berlin state forest, the Grunewald. Even though the SS families lived out in the nature they could be in the center of Berlin (and in their offices in the Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse) in less than half an hour, using the U-Bahn, the Berlin subway system. The SS leadership did not just want to provide their personnel with living space but wanted to promote an elite community. That is why the entire complex was named SS Kameradschafts Siedlung. The SS hired the Gagfah, a housing enterprise who designated their architect Hans Gerlach who designed the Siedlung (settlement) the way the SS - Rasse-und Siedlungshauptamt (RSSHA) envisioned it. About 600 apartments and single family homes had been finished until 1939. A lot of the former forest was kept between the rows of houses to incorporate the settlement into the nature. The building style used was what the Nazis regarded German "Baukunst", simple, yet proud and with decency. All houses looked uniform and even the small yards had to look the same. The SS men and their families could chose the street names, some of them were renamed after 1945 (i.e. "Siegstrasse" / Victory Street; "Ahnenzeile" / Ancestors Row and "Treuepfad" / Loyalty Path), the street "Im Kinderland" (In Children's Land) still has its name today. It is reported that this street name was chosen by the wife of a SS officer as "here the men who are the racial elite of the German people give their valuable genes to a great number of off-springs of healthy stock!" The Gagfah still exists today and the apartments and houses in the former SS housing district are very popular among those who want to rent a home in Berlin. Depending on the size, an apartment rented for RM 48.50 to RM 72 and the house rent was between RM 95 and RM 105.
