CONCENTRATION CAMP

Kurt Knittel was a member of the SS since 1933 and worked as the leader of the ideology training group in SS Sturm 9/32 in Schwetzingen, Germany. In 1940 he was stationed in Radom, a town in occupied Poland as a simple SS-Mann (Private) in the 9.Kompanie 8. SS-Totenkopfstandarte. These units were the guards of the concentration camps. In 1941 he was transfered to Auschwitz and as the leader of Abteilung VI he became respon-sible for the entertainment and ideological education of the SS guards. In 1942 his wife Anne-marie moved to Auschwitz to live with her husband. Kurt was promoted SS-Oberscharführer and "worked" in Auschwitz until late 1944. He lived as a free man in postwar Germany and even worked as a teacher and educator of the German youth! Kurt Knittel is to be considered a small but important piece of the KL Auschwitz machinery.
