"J" MARKED NAZI PASSPORTS GROUP FOR A JEWISH COUPLE FROM VIENNA

ISSUED TO A JEWISH COUPLE FROM VIENNA WHO MANAGED TO GET OUT OF GERMANY IN 1939!

This interesting Nazi German passports group was issued on 9 February 1939 to a couple from Vienna (since 1938 ppart of Germany, formerly Austria), Ernst and Irma Becker. He used to either teach at the university of Vienna or he was a student and his ID document from the university as well as a photo of their cafeˊthey left behind are included. Both passports contain a full page visa issued by the ambassador of the United States in Vienna. They departed from the French port Cherbourg on a ship to the United States of America.

The big letter "J" on the first page in the passport instantly identified the owner as a Jew (see photo below). Since 1938 the so called "Judenstempel" (Jew Stamp), a big red letter "J" was stamped into the passports of Jews by the Nazi German authorities. Besides that, Nazi racial laws made it mandatory that from 1 January 1939 on every Jewish female had to take on the middle name Sara and every Jewish male the middle name Israel. It took a while longer until the law was implemented in the annexed territories, including Austria. The "J" stamped passports were only valid for one year. Not every country allowed Jews to enter the country at that time and because of the "Judenstempel" a lot of Jews were probably rejected. They either had to find a different route out of Nazi Germany or remain under Nazi control and live under constant danger! The Becker couple from Vienna was lucky, they were issued visas by the United States and got out just in time.

the U.S. visa for Ernst Becker

They left the German territory for good on 21 April 1939 - one day after Hitler's 50th birthday. The arrow points at the stamp where the couple crossed the German border.
