Offered for sale is this rare original 1939 document, signed by SS-Hauptsturmführer Friedrich Pradel. SS-Hauptsturmführer Friedrich Pradel was a Polizeikommissar and Major der Schutzpolizei in Amtsgruppe II D 3 of the Reichssicherheitshauptamtes (RSHA) and responsible for the development of the ‘Gaswagen’ (Gas Vans) that were used to kill ‘Undesirables’ and Jews. As head of the Amt II D 3a which controlled all vehicles of the Sicherheitspolizei (SiPo) he attended a meeting hosted by Werner Best about the installation of Einsatzkommandos for France, Holland and Belgium. Pradel’s direct superior was SS-Obersturmbannführer Walter Rauff, one of the main figures responsible for the mass murder in the occupied territories in the east. Shortly after the begin of mass executions other killing methods were discussed, among them the use of Gas Vans. A SS Kommando under Herbert Lange was using them in 1939 and 1940 in Poland already. The Gaswagen were trucks with an enclosed cargo department into which the exhaust fumes were blown until the victims in the back had died. Heydrich ordered the construction of such gas vans for the SiPo and Walter Rauff gave his deputy, Friedrich Pradel the order to make it happen. Pradel met with the lead mechanic from his department, Wentritt and the two together were able to deliver the first five units by November of 1940. The first ‘test subjects’ were 30 inmates from KL Sachsenhausen. There are no exact records but probably 25 units were built and in a report from Pradel’s office Amt II D 3a of the RSHA, dated 5 June 1942, a total of 97,000 people were killed in three Gas Vans within 6 months. After the war Pradel managed not to be found or connected to what he did before 1945 and even managed to get back into the Police force in West Germany. He had the rank of Oberkommissar when he was arrested, stood trial in front of a West German court and was sentenced to seven years of prison for being an accessory to murder in at least 6,000 cases.
