SS-OBERSTURMFÜHRER FRANZ STANGL

WHO WAS COMMANDANT OF THE SOBIBOR AND TREBLINKA EXTERMINATION CAMPS

Franz Paul Stangl (26 March 1908 – 28 June 1971) was an Austrian-born SS commandant of the Sobibór and Treblinka extermination camps during the Operation Reinhard phase of the Holocaust. He was arrested in Brazil in 1967, extradited and tried in West Germany for the mass murder of 900,000 people, and in 1970 was found guilty and sentenced to the maximum penalty, life imprisonment. He died of heart failure six months later.
This document is a letter that Stangl wrote on 7 May 1942 to the SS-Personalhauptam (SS Personnel Head Office). At that time he was commandant of the Sobibor extermination camp.  The letter translates: “To the SS Personnel Office According to the Reichsführer-SS and Chief of the German Police, Order AZ.C.-Ko II SS – Pol.Nr.140/42 from 22 April 1942, I have been ordered to report to the Chief of SS Personnel. I am currently under dentist treatment until 8 June and hereby ask you to postpone my appointment until after my dental treatment. SS-Obersturmführer F. Stangl
