above and below: Franz Magill's wallet that he had on him in the field. Inside the wallet were a number of original photos and documents (see photos) as well as a shoulder board with the insignia of the SS-Sonderkom-mando Dirlewanger and an Iron Cross. It is very likely that this is Franz Magill's Iron Cross but we don't have anything that proves that for sure.

Franz Magill received the letter from the Reichskanzlei when he was still with the guard battallion of Oranienburg concentration camp. Magill must have sent a request to transfer a SS man to a different unit accidently to the wrong address. The letter says that and also that his request was forwarded to the proper address.

SS-HAUPTSTURMFÜHRER FRANZ MAGILL

HE WAS A HIGH RANKING OFFICER IN THE INFAMOUS SS-SONDERKOMMANDO DIRLEWANGER, ONE OF THE MOST FEARED AND RUTHLESS ANTI-PARTISAN AND JEW HUNTING UNITS IN THE ENTIRE SS!

Franz Magill was an officer in the infamous SS-Sonderkommando Dirlewanger. Dirlewanger himself was a sadist and psychopath who was fully protected by Himmler. Dirlewanger's units slaughtered tens of thousands of partisans, Jews as well as civilian men, women and children in the Generalgouvernement and in the Belarus region. The unit (at that time reformed into a Storm Brigade) was also used in the suppression of the Warsaw uprising, being responsible for the killings of about 40,000 civilians in just two days. Franz Magill was a leader in this infamous SS-Sonderkommando and the items shown here belonged to him.

Dirlewanger and his men were too extreme even for many other SS and Police leader. In January 1942, the local Higher SS and Police Leader, SS-Obergruppenführer Friedrich-Wilhelm Krüger threatened: "[Unless] this bunch of criminals disappears from the General Government within a week, I will go myself and lock them up."  In February, the unruly unit was promptly reassigned for anti-partisan duties in German-occupied Belarus, "with a speciality of 'pacifying' an area by slaughtering every man, woman and child."

This secret order, dated 20 July 1943 and addressed to Magill tells him that he is put in charge of a transport unit with trucks full of supplies, where to meet them and where to direct them. The order is sent by the SS-Totenkopf command.
