item # C - 297

A very rare document about the transport of 765 Slovenian Jews to Auschwitz-Birkenau, sent by the the commander of the SD in the Steiermark (Becker) to Adolf Eichmann in the RSHA IV B in Berlin

Eichmann confirmed the receipt of the letter with an "Eingangsstempel" (Notice of Arrival) and signed it. The letter was addressed directly to him (see above and translation below). At the bottom left of the letter it says that the letter is to be presented to Heinrich Himmler too. The blue box next to Eichmann's confirmation of receipt is the one from Himmler's office and contains a signature in blue pencil which probably is the signature of one of his secretaries (a common practice).

Translation of the above document that Becker sent to Eichmann in Berlin (RSHA IV B)

original ink signature of Obersturmbannführer August Becker, at the time still in the rank of Obersturmführer (he was promoted in 1944). Becker signed the letter to Eichmann as well as the travel permit for Obersturm-bannführer Rolf-Heinz Höppner.

SS-Obersturmbannführer August Becker

August Becker (17 August 1900 in Staufenberg – 31 December 1967) was during the Nazi regime in Germany (1933–1945) an SS lieutenant colonel (Obersturmbannführer) and chemist in the Central Reich Security Office (RSHA). He helped design the vans with a gas chamber built into the back compartment used in early Nazi mass murder of disabled people, political dissidents, Jews, and other "racial enemies," including Action T4 as well as the Einsatzgruppen (mobile Nazi death squads) in the Nazi-occupied portions of the Soviet Union. Generally his role was to provide important technical support, but on at least one occasion he personally gassed about 20 people.

SS-Obersturmbannführer Rolf-Heinz Höppner

Rolf-Heinz Höppner ( 24. Februar 1910 in Siegmar - 1998) was a German lawyer and SS-Obersturmbannführer in the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RSHA). He was head of the “Umwandererzentrale” (Resettlement Office) in Posen (Generalgouvernement) which included the title of head of the SD in this region. He was responsible for the „Absiedlung von Fremdvölkischen“ , the deportation of Jews from the Posen region and the settlements of “Volksdeutschen” in the Wartheland. In July of 1944 he was ordered to Berlin, by now promoted to SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) and he became the head of “Amtsgruppe III A “Volks- und Rechtsordnung” in the RSHA. In 1941 Höppner sent a note to Adolf Eichmann in which he informed him about several meetings the local SD officials of the Warthegau had about the “Solution of the Jewish Question in the Warthegau”. He summarized what they talked about in the letter to Eichmann, i.e. that it was suggested that all 300,000 Jews from that region could be placed in one big camp. Jews fit to work could be assembled in groups and Jewish women could be sterilized. At last he informed Eichmann that it is very unlikely that all Jews could still be fed during the upcoming winter (of 1941) and if it would not be more humane to find a quick method of killing those unfit to work, instead of letting them starve to death. As a result a Sonderkommando (Special Commando) led by Herbert Lange used carbon monoxide chambers in the back compartment of trucks to kill Jews. From December of 1941 on the killings of Jews began in extermination camp Kulmhof. He was arrested near Flensburg in July of 1945 and because he was a witness against the main defendants in Nuremberg he was not prosecuted. He went to trial in Poland in 1947, spent a few years in a Polish prison and lived the rest of his life a free man.
