additional Dr. Josef Mengele information:

Josef Mengele was a SS officer and physician in Auschwitz concentration camp during WWII. He was notorious for the selection of victims and for performing unscientific and often deadly human experimants on prisoners, focusing primarily on twins. After the war, he fled to South America, where he evaded capture for the rest of his life.Mengele left Auschwitz on 17 January 1945, shortly before the arrival of the Russian Red Army. He was then transferred to Gross-Rosen concentration camp in Silesia. To avoid to get captured by the Russians he fled westward and was captured by the Americans in June of 1945. He was registered under his real name but because Mengele did not have the SS blood group tattoo, he was not identified as being one of the major war criminals and he was released a month later. He obtained false papers and with the assistance of a network of former SS members Mengele escaped to Argentina in 1949. He lived a free man in South America until he drowned while swimming off the Brazilian coast in 1979.

Offered for sale is Dr. Josef Mengele's original armband from his time as a medic in the 5th Waffen-SS Division plus a cigarette box label with his original signature! When Mengele was a battalion medical officer in the 5th Waffen-SS in Russia he got severely wounded. After he was released from the hospital he was declared unfit for further active service and he went to his hometown Günzburg. His next assignment was Auschwitz concentration camp (he applied to be transfered to the concentration camp service). He left his Waffen-SS gear at home and gave this armband and the signed cigarette box label to an old classmate. The original owner (Will Gehlen, nephew of Wehrmacht Major General Reinhard Gehlen who was chief of the military intelligence on the Eastern Front and during the Cold War one of the most legendary spymasters) bought this grouping from that classmate during a visit of Mengele's hometown. Because of his uncle, Will Gehlen had good connections and started collecting today rare documents and artifacts as early as the 1950s and 1960s, at a time when there was little or no interest in such material, especially in Germany.

Dr. Josef Mengele's medic armband from his time in the 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking. On the inside he wrote his name and unit.
